Social Studies Integrated Unit
Early Northwest Coast People- 1st/2nd
grade
During this unit, students will have
the opportunity to participate in the StoryPath The Early Northwest Coast
People. Students will be gathering information from a variety of
sources, including; StoryPath, childrens' stories, museum visits, and an
artist in residence. To incorporate technology into this unit I have
found a museum site that is informational simply on the web, and may even
spark a family outing for children in the Seattle area.
The Burke Museum, on the campus of
the University of Washington, has a 14,000 piece ethnology collection of
early Northwest Coast objects, as well as, a second videodisk of Pacific
Northwest Native American Art in Museums and Private Collections, on line.
This site allows visitors to access
information on Northwest Coast Languages, Stories and Oral Histories, Totem
Poles, Canoes, Chief Seattle, and Baskets. In my classroom, this
site will be used to develop a deeper knowledge of Totem
Poles, and traditional
myths of the early Northwest Coast people. In the future, I would
also use this site to schedule a class visit to the Burke
museum, or possibly to request artifacts be sent to our school for
further use.

Themed Literature Unit
Coming Together To Raise a Voice-
1st/2nd grade
During this unit students will develop
an awareness of the importance of working together to address important
issues. As the unit evolves over a three-week span, children will
have the opportunity to reflect upon how different characters in literature
have come together to raise a voice. Finally, students will have
the opportunity to apply this to their own lives, and to lives of real
people throughout history.
The site I have selected will be used
toward the end of the unit, when students discuss how Martin Luther King,
Jr. encouraged America to come together to raise a voice. A variety
of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speeches have been prepared for visitors to
listen. The speeches are live recordings of Martin Luther King, Jr.
and ignite the passion behind his voice that words on paper do not capture.

Data Gathering Unit
FOSS Air and Weather- 1st/2nd grade
This unit has been created to provide
an opportunity for students to develop an interest in air and weather,
while becoming familiar with instruments used to monitor weather.
Students will participate in an inquiry based approach to science that
is recognized as the most effective way to help elementary students construct
a solid foundation of scientific knowledge.
The site I have selected will be used
by students frequently to compare the data they have gathered with the
data gathered by the school. There is a unique partnership between
North City Elementary and King 5 that provides School Net information on
current temperatures, humidity, wind, daily precipitation, pressure, and
wind chill. Students will also have the opportunity to compare a
variety of data in different school locations to enhance our development
of weather graphs.
