Data Gathering Unit: Measures of Length and Distance

Overview: This site provides a lesson plan activity for prediction and measurement. The students will work in cooperative groups, predicting and measuring different objects within the classroom that are a given number of yards, feet, inches and centimeters. The students will document their predictions and actual measurements on a chart. This game will culminate in the students understanding of various measurement tools.

This particular site provides value to my data gathering unit on "measuring length and distance" as students will be able to apply their knowledge about measurement via the game.

Suggestions for Use: While teaching my data gathering unit on "measuring length and distance" I will incorporate this activity within the unit. I will refer to the applicable units involved on the site including the activity and assessments (although I will alter the measurements within the game so that they will be more suitable to my unit). This activity will be used towards the end of the unit, after the students have had an ample opportunity to familiarize themselves with varying units of measurement. This will either be used as closure activity or before a test. This activity correlates with the following learning target; "students will be familiar with a variety of measurement units and will be able to identify the differences."
