Safari To Kenya
A social studies unit based on a Storypath

The Storypath "Safari to Kenya" teaches students about Kenya, endangered species of Kenya and the game reserves that help protect these animals.    The website http://www.dc-adnet.com/Photo-Info/homepage.shtml is a virtual tour of the game reserves and animals found in Kenya.  It was created by Matthias Zimber and based on his experiences in the game reserves of Africa. From this website the students can view a slideshow about the Masai Mara game reserve, gather current information, and learn about all the animals found here.  This website would serve as a valuable learning resource for the students and it supplements the game reserve material found in the Storypath very easily.

The Power of One
A third grade themed literature unit

In creating a Themed Literature based on the African culture and following the theme of the power of one, an important part is including literature circles.  One extension project idea with literature circles is doing snapshot biographies based on well-known people of Africa.  To supplement the students learning about these people, there are many websites with current and accurate information.  One that I found particularly useful was http://www.nationalgeographic.com/faces/goodall/.  National Geographic created this website about Jane Goodall and the work she has done in Africa. It has links to other websites that provide more details about her research and life.   The website includes her biography, an essay she wrote, and an interview that the students can listen to and also read the transcribed version.  There are good pictures for the students to look at to help them understand the work that she does in Africa.

Multiplication
A data gathering/problem-solving unit

Teaching multiplication is difficult, especially when students have not yet mastered their basic facts.  One website that I found has fun ways for students to learn their multiplication facts. http://viking.stark.k12.oh.us/~greentown/multiply.htm is basically a website with a lot of links to various web pages designed to help students learn multiplication.  This website is maintained by Patricia Knox of the North Canton City Schools. Two links will help students memorize their basic multiplication facts.  One does it through a tutorial session and the other provides online flashcards.  Each of these links would be useful to different students depending on their learning styles.   There is also a page that will help visual learning students understand multiplication better by using building bricks.
