Guidelines for Selecting Simulations
1. Clearly addresses learning target(s) of unit of learning.
2. Clearly explained and easy to do.
3. Time frame appropriate to setting.
4. Involves the entire class.
Preparing for the Simulation
1. Be clear about learning target.
2. Be prepared, practice on another group if possible.
3. Modify rules as necessary.
4. Prepare materials.
5. Consider how roles will be assigned.
The Simulation
1. Explain the concept of simulation.
2. Explain purpose of the simulation.
3. Explain the rules; demonstrate rules if appropriate.
4. Modify the rules as necessary.
5. Observe events and be prepared to share during debriefing.
The Debriefing
1. Allow adequate time for debriefing.
2. Establish expectations for debriefingólistening to each other, being respectful, paraphrasing responses, piggybacking on ideas.
3. Identify key questions in advance to guide learning.
4. Use strategies to involve everyone in the discussion.
5. Transfer the simulation to
real world situations.
