Real Life Economics

The Community Publishing Company

Students create a publishing company to publish a book about their community. They begin by studying their community and learning about the marketplace and the choices businesses make. They then interview members of the community to create stories and reports about their community. Once the book is written students must decide how to publish their book including the resources needed for publication, the cost of materials and how to obtain a loan to finance the production of their book. Then students advertise and sell their book with the hope of earning a profit.

This real life experience provides students with a hands-on and minds-on approach to learning basic economic principles. The curriculum is available from the National Council on Economic Education, 1140 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10036

Throughout the unit, economic content is linked to other subjects traditionally taught in the middle grades blending economic understanding with the research necessary for the preparation of a news journal.
